Dana Wright of Fort Collins lifted the hem of her sundress Monday during Loveland's Thunder in the Rockies Bike Rally to illustrate that she's biker proud.
Wright showed off the tattoo -- of her mother, Linda McCartney, sitting atop a motorcycle -- that she got a month ago from tattoo artist Jake Doyle, owner of NoCo Studio in Loveland. "I want to show everyone what my tattoo artist can do because he's phenomenal," Wright said.
Wright won first place in the "best biker proud" category during the tattoo contest hosted by Thunder Mountain Harley-Davidson and judged by Lock and Sock RV Tattoo, Piercing, Art Studio, a mobile storefront that operates out of a trailer.
The other categories for the contest -- held during the last day of the four-day motorcycle rally at Thunder Mountain Harley-Davidson -- included best color, best patriotic, most unique and best sleeve for a tattoo from the shoulder to the wrist. Twenty-four tattoo enthusiasts entered the contest to have their body art judged by a panel of three judges: Boyd Antonsen, co-owner of Lock and Sock with his wife, Tammie; Nick Dominges, shop manager; and Barry Cascaden, tattoo artist.
The judges evaluated the lines, coloring, shading and detail of the tattoos, scoring them on a scale of 1-10, Cascaden said. "You're going to see such a wide variety of tattoos," he said. "You're going to see everything under the sun."One of the tattoos judged was of a tribal design on Greeley resident Jeff Mai's back.
"It's real smooth. It blends in real nice," Dominges said. Mai, who didn't place, entered the contest to try something new, he said.
"I'm an artist. I like to design my own stuff," Mai said. "It's some good, healthy competition showing some of my artwork."Loveland resident Dave Pack, who won in the most unique category for a tattoo of the Muppets, entered to show off Doyle's work, he said.
