The Malwani police, investigating the case where a minor was raped by a 16-year-old boy from her neighbourhood, said the tattoos engraved on the accused's body were the names of his former classmates and not victims.
The teenager, whose identity cannot be disclosed as he is a juvenile delinquent, was arrested on Thursday. Officials said he had come to Mumbai from Uttar Pradesh six months ago with a relative. The youth, who has studied till Std VII in UP, used to stay at Julius Wadi in Malwani with his relatives.
On Thursday, the accused took a six-year-old girl from his neighbourhood to a patch of mangroves where he allegedly raped her. The girl's mother found her crying and asked her what had happened. The girl complained of pain in her private parts. Her mother then brought her to the Malwani police station where a case was lodged. Later, the police picked up the teenager. Both underwent a medical examination which confirmed rape.
There were six tattoos on the teenager's body-all names of girls. "On probing, we learnt that the girls were his former classmates from the school where he studied in UP. He does not have a past crime record in Mumbai. We are trying to find out if he has a crime record in UP," said senior inspector V Andhale. The teen did odd jobs in Mumbai. He has been sent to the Dongri remand home.
