Ruth Walker: It’s more than skin-deep, cosmetic tattooing changes lives

Posted in : Gossips, Tattoos

(added 1 days ago)

TATTOOS. It seems that everyone has one these days. Whether it's a tramp stamp à la Christina Aguilera, something a little more esoteric, like Jessica Alba’s (she has the Sanskrit symbol for a lotus flower on her wrist), or a full-on body inking in the David Beckham league, all the celebs are now wearing their art on their sleeves.

Ruth Walker: It’s more than skin-deep, cosmetic tattooing changes lives

For many people, a tattoo is a way of demonstrating individuality or, conversely, membership of some kind of tribe or belief system. For others, it can be life-changing; giving them back a part of themselves that has been cruelly taken away by fire, by disease, by a quirk of fate.

Karen Betts, a make-up artist and hair stylist, taught herself tattooing when she rented part of her building to a tattoo artist. Her earliest attempts were cute little Winnie the Poohs and love hearts – she admits now they were not her finest work. But when, 15 years ago, one of her clients – a woman who had lost her hair during chemotherapy – was willing to let Betts get creative with her neighbour's needle, her career took on a whole new trajectory. “She had lost her eyebrows, so I tattooed them in.

“Then, when she had breast cancer, I tattooed around her nipples after reconstructive surgery. I thought, ‘You know what, there is something to this. I think I could really give people back what they have lost.’”

She travelled to the US to study what was then a fledgling art, learning how to tattoo lips, eyebrows, the eyeline. “Because I could draw, I started designing and creating my own templates, then teaching other people. Gone are the days when people had to have ugly stuck-on eyebrows; now they can have really natural-looking tattooed brows so people don't even know they've had them done.”

There are only around 50 practitioners in the UK with the skill to carry out this kind of advanced work, and Betts has trained many of them through her role as MD of Nouveau Beauty Group, Europe’s largest training centre of permanent make-up. Her talent with the needle has taken her on to television shows such as Big Brother, Extreme Makeover and Ten Years Younger. She has many wealthy clients – among them numerous celebrities – as well as a growing clientele who come to her for medical reasons.

However, probably her most high-profile collaboration is now with Katie Piper, the former model who received agonising facial burns following an acid attack by an ex-boyfriend. Betts saw her on television and immediately felt she could do something to help. Now she is the official permanent make-up consultant for the Katie Piper Foundation. “I knew I could make a big difference and finish off the work the surgeons had done,” says Betts.

“I knew I could give her lip colour back, her brows, her eyes. I could make her feel like a woman again. I approached her and asked her if she would like to come for a consultation and a treatment.”

Piper says now that Betts gave her back her smile, her expression. “It can't abolish scars,” she says, “but it makes you feel the best you can be.”

Soon, Piper introduced more friends, men and women she had met through her charity work, whose entire lives had been scarred by their disfigurement. “I just said to her, ‘I earn so much money doing the cosmetic side of things that I'm happy to give your charity 50 treatments a year – one patient a week can have a treatment.’ Then I'm giving something to these people who have had something taken away from them. I have a gift and can look after them. It really does lift their confidence.”

One client, Nicole, was caught in a house fire so severe it left 97 per cent of her body covered in burns. It seems such a small thing, but her newly tattooed eyebrows have given her her face back. “She has no eyeline,” says Betts, “so I'm going to tattoo that next.”

When she saw herself in the mirror for the first time, she just sobbed with happiness. But not everyone has such an immediately positive reaction. “When people have been burned or are disfigured for any reason, they look in the mirror and start to accept that's the person they are. When you do something like this, to start with, sometimes they don't always like it. They're used to seeing themselves as they now are. When you change them it can take a bit of time to get used to it; but once they do get used to it, that is who they are.”

I wonder, though, if going back to the cosmetic work – giving the Kardashians of the world a permanent lip-line or dark eyeliner, for instance, to ensure they always look their glamorous best – suddenly seems a little vacuous after making such a difference to people who have barely been able to look at themselves in the mirror? “You can still change people's lives,” she insists.

“You might have a woman who has been plucking her eyebrows for ever, and it takes her half an hour in the morning to pencil them in. She might not go swimming with her children because she doesn't want her eyebrows to come off. Or people who wear contact lenses and can't wear make-up because it irritates their eyes. So, even though that's cosmetic, it's something people have been thinking about for a while.

“But, yes,” she adds, “when I get someone who walks in the door who thinks they're ugly even though they're a size eight and are beautiful, and I've just had a burns patient before them, it makes me appreciate everything I have.”

To be or not to be tattooed

Posted in : Celebrity Tattoos

(added 3 days ago)

Deepika Padukone did it. So have many youngsters in Bangalore. After breaking up with their boyfriends and girlfriends, the first thing these youngsters tend to do is to run to dermatologists to get erased those tattoos on their bodies proclaiming their relationships.

To be or not to be tattooed

The Bollywood star allegedly did the same when she split with boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor . She had his initials tattooed on the nape of her neck.

Besides break-ups , family objections and second thoughts, too, are forcing youngsters to queue up before dermatologists to get the 'colourful body art' erased. Removing a tattoo is as much in demand as doing up one, confirm city dermatologists.

The tattoo, once considered to be part of rural culture , is now hip in urban India , thanks to the West embracing it in style. But not everyone who bravely bears the needles retain it permanently. Dermatologists are getting 3-4 cases for tattoo removal every week. The treatment costs between Rs 500 and Rs 50,000, depending on the tattoo's size and colour.

'' Earlier, we used to get cases from villages as tattoo art is popular in rural India. Many migrating to cities had a tattoo and used to visit us for getting it removed. Those were mostly small tattoos of religious symbols or names, and were easy to remove. But now we are getting people from the city, mostly the younger generation (20-30 years),'' said Dr Manoj Parekh, consultant dermatologist, Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital. Dr Venkataram Mysore , dermatologist, Venkat Charmalaya, said: '' People opt for tattoo removal for various reasons. Mostly it is because of a relationship having gone wrong. Teenagers get a tattoo done because they find it fashionable, but many a time they face family objection and are asked to remove it.''

'' They also come to us to remove it after having second thoughts. For instance, girls who come to Bangalore for higher studies get tattoos done and then want to get them removed when they have to return home to get married," he added.

Crucifix tattoo could sink Belfast woman's Miss World hopes

Posted in : Gossips, Tattoos

(added 9 days ago)

An ankle tattoo could yet trip up Belfast beauty Rebecca Maguire on her rocky road to the title of Miss Ireland. The contest has been mired in controversy since the original winner, Miss Mayo Maire Hughes, was stripped of the title for being too old at just 26.

Crucifix tattoo could sink Belfast woman's Miss World hopes

She has since claimed she was told by organisers not to worry about her age. The winner of Miss Ireland goes on to compete at Miss World and the cut-off point for that contest is 25. Queen’s University Belfast student Rebecca sports a cross on a chain design on her ankle down to the top of her foot. According to the rules of the Miss World pageant, ink is out.

As the runner-up, Rebecca was promoted to winner while Miss Derry, Katie McAuley, who was third, is now the official runner-up. Her tattoo — visible in earlier photos, was apparently covered up with make-up for the contest in Dublin on Saturday, April 28.

Rebecca’s tattoo might well be on show again tomorrow as she dons her shorts and trainers to run the Belfast Marathon to support a breast cancer charity. It’s also been claimed that up to 13 of the Miss Ireland contestants would be ineligible for the Miss World pageant.

The Irish Daily Mail claims that 10, including Rebecca, have tattoos, while three were below the minimum height of five feet seven inches. And Miss Derry is also not happy after she was stripped of her title of Miss Vita Liberata, losing a lucrative contract with the self-tanning product company in the process. To add insult to injury, she’s totally browned off that she found out she had lost her prize on Facebook.

The 21-year-old has been fuming about the decision all week, according to her dad, Adrian. He said: “Katie found out about not being the face of Vita Liberata on Facebook. “She was on their page on Monday and saw them announcing Miss Clare Hazel McMahon as the new face of Liberata. “Katie and Hazel are good friends so she wishes her nothing but the best, but to find out on Facebook is not on. Then she just got a text from the company saying there had been a mistake.”

Katie’s sponsor Jenny Taggart said: “I can’t believe the amount of hiccups that have happened at Miss Ireland.” It may not be the final twist in the tale because if Rebecca is drummed out of the competition because of her tattoo, Katie will be on her way to the Miss World contest in Outer Mongolia later this year. A copy of the Miss World rules has so far not been forthcoming from the organisers.

What’s Fueling The Ink Craze?

Posted in : Gossips, Tattoos

(added 14 days ago)

A balance of fact and fictionMIAMI (CBS4) – The sound of a tattoo needle buzzing across your skin, is the price you pay to be part of the “in” crowd these days. Burning a permanent design into your flesh is no longer as radical and rebellious as it once was.

Ami James, owner of Love Hate Tattoo Shop on Miami Beach, says every one young and old is getting inked. ”At this point we got older ladies at the age of 75 coming in here getting tattooed. The generation gap is closing, so much so, parents are signing on the dotted line allowing their kids to brand themselves. We’re almost pushing them away. And we’re like, listen your kid is fifteen, why don’t you give them a little bit. Let them turn 18.”

Ami said it all means the stigma of a tattoo is gone.  “I can finally say people don’t look down at us and we are looked upon like everybody else.”According to the website totalbeauty.com, Miami is the epicenter of the cool crowd. It ranked the most inked city in the nation… for every 100,000 residents. Miami Beach ranked number one with the most tatoo shops… 24 in all.

So why is Ocean Drive littered with ink? Jeremy Gutsche from trendhunter.com says it’s partly because of all that skin we’re willing to show. “Whenever you have a culture that is beachside based like Miami or Sao Paolo you see a much higher interest that is cosmetic, whether it’s plastic surgery or something like a tattoo,” said Gutsche.

Love Hate Tattoos was once where the popular TLC reality show “Miami Ink” was filmed and it’s that recent surge in pop culture that experts say is the reason why it’s now popular to get inked. “Over the last few years you’ve started to see a celebration of tattoos in the media whether its Angelina Jolie, the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo or reality TV like Miami ink.

“Every rock star, basketball player, football player, rapper, pop star, you name it… every one is getting tattooed,” said Ami James. And the adoration for physical adornment hasn’t met its peak yet…SPIKE TV is auditioning tattoo artists for a new reality competition…and they came to South Florida to find potential contestants.

“It’s the hardest art form out there. The canvas moves screams, bleeds, cries,” declared TJ Halvorsen of Tattoo Trends. He’s been tattooing for 7-years and sees a change in the kind of person walking into his shop.

“Doctors, lawyers. blue-collar, white-collar, I tattooed a full back piece on a priest,” Halvorsen explained to CBS4′s Vanessa Borge. But for some, tattoos are still perceived negatively. “I think it comes off a little dirty, a little unprofessional. Typically when you talk about tattoos the first people who you think of are these motorcycle people right?” declared one parent to Borge.

That stigma stems from how tattooing originated… as a symbol of solidarity between members of the military and prison inmates. In 2012, the bond is among people who are inked versus those who are not. In fact, a report by the Food and Drug Administration estimated that as many as 45 million Americans have tattoos. ‘Thirty-six percent of people ages 25 to 29 had at least one tattoo. And just 17-percent of those… regret it.

“I was in Spain on holiday when I was 14 it was the biggest mistake I have ever made.” said this woman who didn’t want to give her name. “I was 17 and I wanted a tattoo. It was ten bucks,” said another woman.

“Perhaps in 20-years or 30-years when you look back you’ll look at that butterfly tattoo on your back…. you’re not gonna be very happy that you did it,” said Gutsche. He suggests more and more people are getting tattoos because they don’t feel it’s as permanent as you may think.

“Whether it’s through lasers or chemical kits you see in the media, they make it seem like its less permanent than it actually is,” explained Gutsche. A tattoo that cost several hundred dollars could require several thousand dollars and many laser sessions to remove.”So remember, the tattoo trend may not be as permanent as the tattoo itself. Tattoos will outlast fashion and fashion changes. tattoos don’t. So before you get inked… think twice.

In a teaser clip for her new single 'Call My Name', Cheryl gives fans a glimpse of a new tattoo running from her left buttock down the back of her leg … but it looks more like something else is running down the back of her leg!

Cheryl Cole's new tattoo looks like she pooed her pants

Yep, Cheryl kinda looks like she's pooed her pants! It's unclear what the new tattoo is meant to be, but in the low light of the film clip you could be forgiven for thinking the poor woman had a little accident and had to duck into her local sewer to clean herself up!

Brandon Jennings has a Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles tattoo

Posted in : Gossips, Tattoos

(added 16 days ago)

On average, NBA players have lots of tattoos. It's part of the culture, for one thing, but also an opportunity for players to bring attention to people or places that have played a central role in getting them to where they are. Think Stephon Marbury's "Coney Island's Finest" ink or Kevin Durant's large show of support for his home state of Maryland.

Brandon Jennings has a Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles tattoo

Milwaukee Bucks guard Brandon Jennings is from Compton in Los Angeles, and he has many tats that pay tribute to his hometown. One, though, stands out more than others: a chicken-emblazoned waffle on his left forearm in honor of the legendary Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles. Jennings recently posted a photo of it to his Instagram account, and you can check it out above (via Stiletto Jill).

On the face of it, it's a little ridiculous for someone to put a tattoo of a waffle on his arm. But it makes perfect sense if you've ever been to Roscoe's, or really just know about it's status as a landmark. Anyone from the area speaks of it in reverential tones. In reality, a Roscoe's tat for a Compton native is about as normal as a Philadelphian getting ink of the Liberty Bell.

Of course, Jennings' Roscoe's love doesn't stop here — over the weekend, he also tweeted a photo of his special Roscoe's basketball shoes. Yet even that isn't especially crazy. Honestly, it might seem perfectly normal until he shows up to a game in a chicken suit. Which, at this rate, might eventually happen.

Pasco man with baseball tattoos becomes media darling

Pasco man with baseball tattoos becomes media darlingMike McWain's tattoos that display a history of baseball are causing quite a stir. Or, more accurately, a media sensation. Ever since the front page Tri-City Herald story Monday about the Pasco man's field of dreams tattoos appeared, newscasters and writers as well as sports enthusiasts across the country have been hounding him for interviews and turning his life upside down.

"It has been totally crazy since the story ran," McWain told the Herald on Thursday. "My kids love all the attention, though."He's been interviewed by newspaper sports writers from The Daily in New York, chatted on the radio with the sportscaster for the Cincinnati Reds baseball team, and this week was interviewed by Tony Ott on KONA AM and FM 98.3 The Key radio.

"Friends have been telling me my tattoos are all over the internet," McWain said. "It really is insane how far this has gone. I never would have imagined this kind of reaction could happen over baseball tattoos."

Since the story broke, there have been more than 24,000 page views at tri-cityherald.com and more than 25,000 page views on the Herald's photo gallery, and the video of McWain taking viewers on a tour through each tattoo and its historic significance, has been watched almost 3,000 times.

While many readers were curiosity seekers, there was plenty of interest from national news agencies including CNN, Sports Illustrated and independent sports bloggers such as YardBarker.com and NESN.com, the New England Sports Network.

While the bulk of the viewers have come from the United States, a few baseball and/or tattoo fans from Canada and the United Kingdom also have stopped by tricityherald. Bill Dennison, sports reporter for 700 WLW radio in Cincinnati, said he caught wind of McWain's baseball tattoo story Tuesday, then went in search of it online.

"After we found the story on your website, the announcer (for the Reds baseball team) talked about it on the air, so I decided to track down Mr. McWain and see if we could get him to give us an interview," Dennison said in a phone interview with the Herald.
