Body art puts paint next to nothing

September 3, 2010 |10:09 | Gossips  By : Team X

You need four things to get ready for body painting: "A shave, clean underwear, wine and nipple coverings," says model Veronica Guerra. You also need brushes. And an artist who appreciates an unusual canvas. Plus someone who's willing to walk around in front of a couple hundred people covered by only a thin layer of paint. But the clean underwear certainly doesn't hurt.

Body art puts paint next to nothing

Across the country, nightclubs are putting body painting on the summer's entertainment menu. From the L2 Lounge in Washington, D.C., to the Voyeur in San Diego, California, club-goers are gathering to watch artists cover models head-to-toe in sweat-proof, washable paint. Or they're showing up at glow-in-the-dark body painting parties to do it themselves. "It's so fun, it's ridiculous," world-renowned body painter Craig Tracy said. "It's just incredibly visual and a great way to meet strangers.

She asks: "Why are so many young people scarring their bodies?  As your body sags, so does the art!"

Business for tattoo artists is booming, and the folks getting art on their bodies range from sales executives to web developers. They've become mainstream, and there are tattoo sketch books for 6-year-olds. "Tattoos are one of those things people will spend money on," said one tattoo artist.

The Review Of The Girl With The Dragon TattooThe Review Of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo: For the twelve people who haven't heard of Stieg Larsson, he is the Swedish journalist turned novelist who wrote the 'Millennium trilogy', a phenomenally successful crime series which has sold over 3 million copies world wide. The first book, 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo', was adapted onto the silver screen over a year ago, and has grossed about $100 million worldwide since then. Larsson tragically died in 2004 before his books were published so was unable to see what a phenomenon he had created. However, it has also been rumoured that Larsson left half finished manuscripts on his computer, so we might yet witness the release of more books and films by this talented thriller writer.

Human Canvases Tattoo

August 21, 2010 |09:39 | Gossips | Tattoos  By : Team X

Human Canvases TattooHuman Canvases Tattoo: The human body becomes a canvas in the hands of tattoo artist Horiyoshi III. Each dot, each line is carefully engraved, until gradually it becomes a colorful masterpiece. Horiyoshi fills the arms, legs, backs and fronts, bringing to life the dragons, tigers, flowers and characters from ancient Japanese and Chinese tales with his touch.

"There are many aspects to tattoos — they represent strength, art, tradition and have a sense of the outlawed," Horiyoshi said. "There is magic power that enchants people to get tattoos, despite the social consequences."

Tattoos have long been relegated to the shadows of society. People often connect them to the yakuza and there is an automatic fear against people sporting body art. Public places, including pools, spas and bathhouses, bar tattooed customers.

But Horiyoshi, who himself has a full-body tattoo, stressed that people with tattoos should not automatically be regarded as criminals.

"Tattoos are a sign of power, and power equals violence — that is the (theme) depicted in the movies and by the media," Horiyoshi said. "These fearful images are planted in our heads in our daily lives or on TV or at the pool or hot springs.

Creative Body Type

August 20, 2010 |09:43 | Gossips  By : Team X

Creative Body TypeCreative Body Type: Knowledge is power Try as her elders did to raise her up old-school, the Cuban/Mexican Oxnard-bred Christina Diaz eschewed traditional gender roles, choosing an education over what she saw as the bridge to nowhere that they were proposing. “You find a good man, you get knocked up, and you bow to him. You don’t use your brain,” she said, describing the path many of her female peers and family members chose. At 29, Diaz has a B.A. degree in English literature and an M.A. in English rhetoric and composition. She received zero accolades from the women who hoped to see her knee-deep in domestic responsibilities and did not attend her graduation. Though not barefoot, Diaz was six months pregnant when she accepted her master’s degree. Today, she is one of the lucky ones, a self-sufficient single mom working her dream job as editor of Agoura Hills-based Tattoo Savage magazine and loving every minute.

Guns and roses
Diaz’s newly christened Pistol Inc. has been operating as a nameless entity for the last year and a half, but when someone referred to her as “the chick who puts on shows,” she realized it might be time to make her venture more official-like. What began as a gesture of gratitude toward a local charity has grown into a successful venture, with the flagship body art and culture fundraiser Ink for a Cause at the county fairgrounds — which drew 5,000 people last year — and numerous art and music shows throughout Ventura County. She plans to take Ink for a Cause nationwide and was savvy enough to secure a web domain and applicable trademarks, but profit is not her objective. “I’m doing this to promote good people, to give back to the community that has made a difference in my life. I have a good job, a job I love. I have income — this is all for fun.

Geek-fueled tattoo madness

August 10, 2010 |17:20 | Gossips  By : Team X

UGO has a pretty fantastic gallery of the geekiest tattoos imaginable. Optimus Prime, Megatron in his Walther P38 form, Gonzo, and Hell Boy are just a few of the body art commitments. Now, I love Mario, of "Super Mario Bros." fame, for example, because he was such a titanic figure in my youth. Would I have Mario tattooed on my body as a gesture of my perpetual devotion to him? That would be a no. Darth Vader, though, that's a whole other conversation...
